For Kids: Follow Me | Epiphany 3 | Year A

Opening Song: The Apostles' Creed

Big Idea: Jesus tells us to follow Him!

Story: "The Disciples" | Spark Story Bible, pg. 258

Say: Jesus told people to follow Him. Did He only pick super special people to follow Him? ... No. He wanted ordinary people, like me and you to follow Him.

Lesson Video | Jesus Calls Peter (and the Other Disciples)

Ask: What do you think it means to follow Jesus? ... When we follow someone, it's usually because we like them or want to be like them.

Let's play a quick game of follow the leader. Do what I do, ok? (Do a few actions that the kids can repeat).

In the game, you followed me and did what I did. When we follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit helps us to act as Jesus did. What are some ways we can do what Jesus did? ... (Love others, be kind, help those in need, etc.)

Say: Now, when the story talks about being fishers of people, all that means is that we are supposed to ask other people if they want to follow Jesus too. But, if we act in a way that is not like Jesus, then people probably wouldn't want to follow Jesus. So, it's important to act like Jesus and share the good news about Him with our words and our actions!

Now let's sing a song together about being Fishers of "Men" (which just means "people").

Song for Kids | Fishers of Men

Activity Sheets or Play

After the song, hand out the activity sheets. Younger children are welcome to play with the Duplos (encourage them to play out a story that fits with the lesson).

End with the Lord's Prayer when the Usher comes to let you know the prayers have started

(If you need more time)

  • Go around the room and ask the children to share something they are thankful for this week.

  • Ask them if there is anything or anyone they would like to pray for this week.

Ending Song: The Lord's Prayer
